How is our lettuce better for you?

  • Many farms use pesticides when growing produce. The only way to make sure your produce is pesticide-free is to check with the grower. Pesticides include herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. With the increase in GMO crops, pesticide use has increased. See “We grow without GMOs” for more.

Here at Fresh ‘n Crisp Farms, we believe that all pesticides are harmful, no matter where they come from. We are proudly pesticide free. We use biological controls to manage bugs and pests without harmful chemicals. We also grow in a closed facility, which allows us to control what our lettuce comes into contact with, unlike growers who grow in fields.

  • Genetically modified organisms are in many of the foods we consume today. But what makes GMOs potentially harmful? Since the introduction of GMOs, pesticide use has increased, especially glyphosate, which is a possible carcinogen. Pesticide use has increased because these GMOs are resistant to them, which allows farmers to use more of these pesticides without killing their crops, and only killing weeds and other pests. This increases the amount of pesticides you are exposed to and ingest in your daily life.

At Fresh ‘n Crisp Farms, we want you to feel confident in the food at you’re eating. Because we grow indoors, we have no weeds, and our pests are managed without pesticides, creating a cleaner and pesticide free environment.

  • Field grown lettuce uses far more water than hydroponically grown lettuce for many reasons. One of the main reasons we use less water is that we filter and reuse the water in our facility. We also save you water and time by growing lettuce that does not need to be washed. It’s grown ready-to-eat: no dirt, no chemicals, no pollutants, and no added preservatives.

  • Our local lettuce model was designed to be better for people and the environment. We reduce our carbon footprint by being local, and by conserving energy and water at our greenhouse. We work hard to ensure that our lettuce is on grocery store shelves within 24 hours of harvest. Less travel time means less emissions and more nutrients. We use as much natural sunlight as possible to grow our greens (vs relying on synthetic lighting). And our advanced systems enable us to filter, purify and sustainably reuse high-quality, nutrient-rich water.

  • Hydroponic growing uses one fifth of the land that field growing needs to achieve the same results. Our growing process works so that our lettuce is always in the best possible conditions for the current life stage, and since our plants don’t have to fight for nutrients, we can grow them closer together than would be possible in a field.

Hydroponic growing can also be done in urban areas. We can feed more people, with less room, in places that traditionally would not be able to be used for growing fresh produce effectively.

  • We do more with less: less water, less land, fewer food miles, a smaller carbon footprint — and more lettuce. We do not pollute our lakes, rivers, or land with harmful chemicals. This makes us more sustainable than most produce available in stores.

  • Since we grow in an automated environment, we can ensure the freshest and crispest lettuce possible. We do this by creating ideal conditions for growth via temperature, light, water, and harvesting methods. Our lettuce is also hands-free, which means you’ll be the first person to touch the lettuce you buy.

We strive to ship the same day we harvest, so our lettuce can get to your fridge as fast as possible. This means our lettuce is fresher, crisper, and longer lasting!

  • Because we grow indoors and in a controlled environment without dirt, pesticides, pollution or preservatives, we can reduce the risk of diseases like E-Coli and other food-borne illnesses compared to traditional growing methods. We can also make sure there are no harmful chemicals on our plants.

  • What is triple washing? What does it mean? What does it do? We ask ourselves the same questions here at Fresh ‘n Crisp Farms.

Triple-washing is the process of washing lettuce three times. Once in fresh water, and twice in a sanitizer solution, like chlorine. The purpose of this is mainly to get rocks and debris off of the greens. This washing method also kills some of the bacteria on the greens, but there are still enough microbes present to get you sick.

Here at Fresh ‘n Crisp Farms, we grow greens that are clean and free from pesticides, chemicals, and dirt that would require any kind of wash, and our growing methods allow us to have better disease control. When picking up our lettuce, you can be sure it’s delicious and ready for a meal, without any dirt or chemicals, and no wash needed. Enjoy!

  • Our customers say our lettuce tastes better than any other lettuce they’ve tried. With all the benefits to our lettuce, how could it not? Try for yourself and find out.
